Description

Mary Cleare directs this fun play that was a great success in London's West End

Roger has enough trouble assembling his cricket team to play against the British Railways Maintenance Division Reading East, but these complications pall before those occurring among their various wives and girlfriends. As a final catastrophe, rain starts to fall. The play, from the author of Stepping Out, was first seen at the Queen's Theatre, London, starring Julia McKenzie and Maureen Lipman.

Bucks Free Press Review (by unknown)
Lane End Players scored handsomely with their 38th production last week when packed houses rocked in the aisles to the humour of Richard Harris's cricketing comedy Outside Edge, and what seemed a natural choice in a village whose on cricket club had just celebrated its centenary. As usual the set was impeccably designed.
Mary Cleare's production was well balanced and the choice of actors was ideal. Kath Gill playing the sexy, trendy Maggie. Scott Yarrow as a diminutive husband was a perfect foil and the partnership did much to keep the pace of the paly moving along.
Eve Berry as Miriam, the skipper's wife, bustling and dedicated as the teas organiser on match days, was admirably suited to the part, and Charles Bushell as the captain, totally engrossed int he sport and the club, provided the pivot around which the play revolved and did it extremely well, with Lou Jackson studiously bored with the whole thing but determined to keep and eye on her cricketing husband played by Paul Brown.
This was one of the most professional performances seen at Lane End and augers well for the future of the Players, who have a good deal of new talent, which was particularly evident in Caroline Hawkins, Vic Berry and David Brown in their supporting roles.
Next production is the pantomime Cinderella in January.
